Nightguard for Bruxism

Here at Smile Hub Dental Clinic in Bayside Medical Centre, we see teeth grinding as a very common cause of worn down or damaged teeth. Bruxism is another name for teeth clenching or grinding. Overtime continuous grinding can have a negative effect on the teeth and lead to broken teeth. There is no exact cause of bruxism but stress, anxiety, alcohol and cigarettes, an abnormal bite or crocked teeth can be triggers.

The main treatment for bruxism is a nightguard. A nightguard is a plastic removable appliance which is worn at night to stop the top and bottom teeth from meeting which prevents damage to the enamel and teeth. It also relieves tension put on the jaw muscles while clenching at night. If you have any of the following symptoms there is a chance you are grinding your teeth and may need a nightguard.

  • Grinding or clenching your teeth
  • Waking up with headaches
  • Pain in the jaw
  • Facial pain
  • Tiredness due to lack of sleep

There are different types of nightguards but we recommend getting a nightguard fitted by your dentist here at Smile Hub Dental Clinic as it is customised to fit perfectly on your teeth and will usually last longer than other types. Here are some of the pros and cons of different nightguards on the market.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do night guards work?

Nightguards are the best solution for people who grind their teeth in their sleep. It protects the enamel of the teeth from wear and can also prevent damage to the teeth. Your dentist will let you know what is the best nightguard option for your specific case. It is important to get screened for sleep apnoea before getting a nightguard.

Can a nightguard cause tooth decay?

Even though a mouthguard is needed to prevent damage to the teeth and jaw, there is a chance of tooth decay developing as the bacteria can build up and be trapped around the teeth. Gum infections are also possible due to this bacteria. Be sure to brush your teeth and floss before putting in your nightguard and also clean your appliance regularly.

Should I get a night guard for upper or lower teeth?

The nightguard recommended to you by your dentist will depend on your specific case and the severity of your grinding. Upper nightguards are better for staying in place to protect your teeth. Lower nightguards can be more comfortable and easier to adjust to. The best nightguard should protect all of your teeth from damage while keeping your bite correct.

How long do dental night guards last?

The lifespan of a nightguard depends on which type you have and how severe your grinding is. People with severe grinding habits can wear down their nightguards and need to change them often. A nightguard should last about 5 years if it is used regularly and the grinding is moderate.

How do I clean a mouthguard?

Every time you remove your nightguard you should brush and wash it in cool water. Never use hot water as it can change the shape of the nightguard. You can also buy a over the counter denture cleaner which you can submerge your nightguard in once a week to keep it clean.
