How Often Should Children Get Their Check-Ups?

This is a question we get a lot so we thought we’d create simple blog post about it and how we can help!

Here, we will focus on:

  1. A) Frequency with which children  should get their check-ups
  2. B) What happens if they miss one on their appointments
  3. C) What can happen if you ignore their oral hygiene
  4. D) How to keep their teeth strong, healthy & pearly white at all times

When your child’s baby teeth start to show and come through, that is when it’s time to bring them to the dentist. This often happens between 6 and 8 months old.

After that, it’s every 6 months that you should bring them in for a check up. Routine is very important for kids, so getting them used to this routine will make it easier for them and also for you going forward. This normalisation of the routine will lead to less stress in future and the dispelling of negative thoughts associated with trips to the dentist.

What Can Happen If They Miss An Appointment?

Parents regardless will feel nervous for their child’s first appointment. Pay attention to the dentists advice and always follow their lead.

In the unfortunate event that you have to skip an appointment make a replacement one for two or three days later.

If one appointment is missed, theoretically nothing is going to happen.

What can happen if you completely ignore their oral hygiene?

As soon as their teeth develop so too can cavities. Decay, rotten teeth, and in the end, tooth loss may all occur due to cavities. Be vigilant when checking their teeth since poor oral hygiene can cause several complications, such as:

Chewing difficulties – can affect their diet, meaning they may have to restrict themselves to certain foods or drinks.

Loss of confidence due to physical appearance, tooth loss.

Poor sleep quality – painful or burdensome cavities can lead to poor sleep which can affect many parts of the human condition.

How to keep their teeth strong, healthy & pearly white at home – at home maintenance

Eating habits and everyday routines will be part of the advice given by your dentist, heed this advice. By adhering to this routine, your child will easily maintain healthy gums & pearly whites! The best guides are:

Remind your kids to brush twice a day, for at least two minutes at a time!

Fluoride toothpaste should be used, it helps with cavities and tooth decay.

Sugary food and drinks and fizzy sodas should be consumed only on special occasions, this is a a good health tip in general.

What can you expect from the first dentist’s visit?

Be open with your child, explain to them what is about to happen. If you see them feeling nervous be patient with them.

First visits normally last between 30 and 45 minutes, where the dentist will examine their teeth and jaw.
