Nightguard for Bruxism
Here at Smile Hub Dental Clinic in Bayside Medical Centre, we see teeth grinding as a very common cause of worn down or damaged teeth. Bruxism is another name for teeth clenching or grinding. Overtime continuous grinding can have a negative effect on the teeth and lead to broken teeth. There is no exact cause of bruxism but stress, anxiety, alcohol and cigarettes, an abnormal bite or crocked teeth can be triggers.
The main treatment for bruxism is a nightguard. A nightguard is a plastic removable appliance which is worn at night to stop the top and bottom teeth from meeting which prevents damage to the enamel and teeth. It also relieves tension put on the jaw muscles while clenching at night. If you have any of the following symptoms there is a chance you are grinding your teeth and may need a nightguard.
- Grinding or clenching your teeth
- Waking up with headaches
- Pain in the jaw
- Facial pain
- Tiredness due to lack of sleep
There are different types of nightguards but we recommend getting a nightguard fitted by your dentist here at Smile Hub Dental Clinic as it is customised to fit perfectly on your teeth and will usually last longer than other types. Here are some of the pros and cons of different nightguards on the market.
